A window that opens two ways

If you have windows that are difficult to reach, hard to clean safely, or where an outward-opening casement would cause a problem, tilt and turn is worth understanding

A tilt and turn window operates using a single handle that controls two distinct opening positions. Turned to the first position, the top of the window tilts inward by a few inches — enough for controlled ventilation without any security risk and without rain entering the room. Turned to the second position, the entire sash swings inward on a side hinge, like an inward-opening door. This gives full access to both faces of the glass from inside the building, making cleaning straightforward regardless of the floor level or the position of the window relative to a roof, balcony, or obstruction outside.

Tilt and turn windows appear regularly across the kinds of properties Alpha works on in South Buckinghamshire and East Berkshire — on upper floors of larger detached homes where external access for cleaning is impractical, on apartment buildings, on properties where an outward-opening casement would obstruct a terrace, walkway, or planting close to the building, and on new builds and extensions with a European architectural influence where the inward-opening style is specified as part of the design. They are also a practical choice for any room where leaving a window tilted for background ventilation — overnight, or during the day when the room is unoccupied — is useful and safe.

Why it matters

What tilt and turn windows do that other styles cannot

Safe cleaning

Clean any window from inside, safely

For upper floor windows, flat roof extensions, or any opening where there is no safe external access, the ability to swing the sash fully inward and clean both faces of the glass from inside is not a convenience — it is a practical necessity. Tilt and turn windows solve this problem completely, without scaffolding, extending ladders, or window cleaning contractors for those specific openings.

Ventilation

Background airflow without compromise

The tilt position provides controlled, continuous ventilation that a casement window cannot replicate safely when the room is unoccupied. Tilted open, a tilt and turn window allows air movement without meaningful security risk, without rain entry in most weather conditions, and without the sash moving in wind. For bedrooms, home offices, and any room where regular background ventilation matters, this is a genuinely useful operational advantage.

Security

Secure in both open positions

Multi-point locking engages in the closed position. In the tilt position, restrictor arms built into the frame prevent the opening from being widened from outside — the window cannot be forced open from the tilt position. The inward-opening turn position means there are no external projections or hardware that can be tampered with from outside. Tilt and turn windows are consistently rated among the most secure operational window types by independent security assessments.

Performance

A-rated thermal efficiency as standard

The tilt and turn mechanism does not compromise thermal performance. When closed, the sash presses against a continuous perimeter seal that creates an airtight closure — the same compression seal approach used on flush casement windows and one of the most effective at preventing air infiltration. All tilt and turn windows we install are A-rated and meet current building regulation requirements.

Your options

uPVC or Aluminium — matched to your property and priorities

Tilt and turn windows are available in both uPVC and aluminium. The choice between them follows the same logic as for any other window style — material, finish, and what matters most for your home.

Most Popular

uPVC Tilt and Turn Windows

uPVC tilt and turn windows are the most common specification for the situations where this style is needed. The profile is robust, thermally efficient, and available in the full range of colours and woodgrain finishes. The hardware required for the dual-opening mechanism is built into the frame and operates smoothly over a long service life. For most homes in South Bucks and East Berkshire where tilt and turn is specified for practical reasons — upper floor cleaning access, outward obstruction, or overnight ventilation — uPVC delivers everything required.

Upper floor and hard-to-reach windows Practical ventilation requirements Cost-effective solution

Premium Choice

Aluminium Tilt and Turn Windows

Aluminium tilt and turn windows are the right choice where slim sightlines and a premium finish matter alongside the functional benefits of the dual-opening mechanism. On a contemporary extension or a high-specification property where the windows are expected to make a visual statement as well as perform practically, aluminium delivers the combination of slim frame, refined colour, and long-term durability that uPVC does not match. The inward-opening mechanism works identically in both materials — the difference is entirely in the quality of the result.

How it works

The practical detail behind the tilt and turn mechanism

The dual-opening function of a tilt and turn window is controlled by a single handle. Understanding how it works and what each position is used for makes specifying and using these windows straightforward.

01

The tilt position

With the handle turned to the horizontal position, the top of the window sash tilts inward by approximately 100 to 150mm — controlled by restrictor arms built into the frame. This position provides continuous background ventilation without any meaningful security risk, since the opening is too narrow to allow entry and the restrictor arms are robust. It is the position most homeowners use for day-to-day ventilation — left tilted overnight, or while a room is unoccupied, without the concern of rain, wind, or security that a fully open window carries. The tilt position also prevents the window from slamming in a gust of wind, since the sash is controlled by the restrictor arms at all points in its movement.

Practical note

The tilt position is particularly useful in bedrooms where overnight ventilation matters but security cannot be compromised.

02

The turn position

With the handle turned to the vertical position, the sash swings inward on its side hinges and opens fully like an inward-opening door. This gives complete access to both faces of the glass and the full perimeter of the frame from inside the building. The practical consequence is that cleaning the external face of any tilt and turn window — regardless of its floor level, its position relative to a roof or balcony, or whether there is any safe external access — can be done safely from inside. This is the primary reason tilt and turn windows are specified for upper floors and for any window where external access is impractical or hazardous.

Practical note

In the turn position, the window opens to 90 degrees inward. Confirm that there is sufficient clearance inside the room — furniture, curtain tracks, and radiators positioned directly below a window can restrict full opening.

03

Colour and finish

Tilt and turn windows are available across the full range of colours and finishes that apply to any uPVC or aluminium window we fit. White remains the most common choice, but Anthracite Grey, Black, and woodgrain finishes are all frequently specified. Because tilt and turn windows are often used on upper floors or in positions where the mechanism matters more than the visual impact — though both matter — the colour choice tends to be made in the context of the overall elevation rather than as a standalone decision. We bring samples to every visit and will advise on the finish that works best in the context of your property.

Practical note

Dual-colour finishes are available in both uPVC and aluminium — a different colour on the inside face to the outside — for homeowners who want a neutral interior finish alongside a more deliberate exterior colour.

04

Glass and security

All tilt and turn windows we install include A-rated double glazing as standard. Acoustic glass is available for any elevation where noise reduction is a priority. The tilt and turn mechanism is inherently secure in both positions: in the tilt position, the window cannot be forced to a wider opening because the restrictor arms are structural components of the frame, not surface fittings. In the closed position, multi-point locking engages automatically when the handle is returned to vertical. The combination of inward opening and multi-point locking makes tilt and turn windows among the most secure operational window types available.

Practical note

All hardware on tilt and turn windows meets current British security standards. The mechanism is designed for sustained use over a long service life — it is not a feature that wears quickly with regular operation.

Alpha Windows are brilliant. Great customer service, great windows, competitively priced and superbly fitted. Their fitter is so good and diligent that he managed to fit the replacement windows with barely any disruption to the plaster. I don't even need to repaint around the aperture. Highly recommend.

Common questions

What homeowners ask us about tilt and turn windows

A single handle controls two distinct opening modes. In the first position — handle horizontal — the top of the sash tilts inward by around 100 to 150mm, held by restrictor arms built into the frame. This provides secure background ventilation. In the second position — handle vertical — the sash swings fully inward on its side hinges, like an inward-opening door, giving complete access to both faces of the glass for cleaning. The closed position locks the sash at multiple points around the perimeter.

Yes. This is the primary practical advantage of the style. With the sash swung fully open in the turn position, both the internal and external faces of the glass are accessible from inside the building. For upper floor windows or any opening where there is no safe external access, this removes the need for ladders, scaffolding, or window cleaning contractors for those specific openings.

Yes. In the tilt position, the sash is held by restrictor arms that are structural components of the frame — they cannot be removed or forced from outside, and they prevent the window from being opened further from the tilt position. The opening itself is too narrow to allow entry. The tilt position is suitable for overnight use in an occupied property.

No. Tilt and turn windows open inward only — the sash tilts inward at the top or swings fully inward on the side hinge. This is what makes them suitable for situations where an outward-opening casement would be obstructed — by a terrace, a walkway, a roof directly below, or planting close to the building. It also means there are no external projections or hardware vulnerable to weather or interference.

Generally yes, because the dual-opening mechanism is more complex than a standard casement hinge and handle. The difference is not dramatic, and for the situations where tilt and turn is the right specification — upper floor cleaning access, inward-opening requirement, secure background ventilation — the additional cost is straightforwardly justified by what the window does that a casement cannot.

The tilt and turn mechanism is designed for sustained, regular operation — it is not a feature that degrades quickly with use. On quality profiles, the handle and the internal gear mechanism that controls the two opening positions will operate correctly for the life of the window under normal conditions. All hardware we specify meets current British standards and is covered by our 10-year installation guarantee.

The sash swings inward to 90 degrees in the turn position, so the clearance needed inside the room is approximately equal to the height of the window. Furniture, curtain tracks, and radiators directly below or alongside the window can restrict full opening if they are positioned too close. We check clearance during the site visit and will advise if there are any constraints that need addressing before the window is specified.

For most window and door replacements, no. Like-for-like replacements fall under permitted development rights and require no planning permission. If your property is in a conservation area — parts of Windsor and Beaconsfield Old Town, for example — or if it's listed, there may be restrictions on colour, style, or material. We know the local areas well and will flag anything relevant during your visit.

Yes. FENSA registration means every installation we complete is certified to meet current building regulations, and the work is registered with your local authority automatically. This is important if you ever sell your home — solicitors will ask for it. You don't need to do anything; we handle the registration on your behalf.

Our installations come with a 10-year guarantee as standard, covering both frames and sealed glazing units. Combined with FENSA registration and our full public liability insurance, you're protected throughout the installation and long after completion.

Yes. We remove all old frames and glass and dispose of them responsibly. We also leave your home clean and tidy at the end of every job — it's part of how we work, not an optional extra.

We don't consider a job complete until you're satisfied. If something isn't right, tell us and we'll fix it. Our reputation in South Bucks has been built over 20 years — we have every reason to make sure you're happy.
