Glass & Glazing in South Bucks & East Berkshire
Your windows are only as good as the glass in them
A huge range of glass for every kind of home and project: quieter rooms, safer doors, cooler conservatories, glazing that suits a period property. Specified honestly, measured properly and fitted by us, as we've done since 2003.
Before you choose
Most people only think about glass when something's wrong with it.
The bedroom that's never quiet. The conservatory that's either freezing or a greenhouse. The new window that looks wrong on a period cottage. We supply a huge range of glass (acoustic, heritage, toughened, laminated, solar control, decorative and more) but the real work is figuring out which of it solves your problem. We measure your property properly, tell you honestly what you need, and fit it ourselves, so you're never left translating a spec sheet on your own.
Find what you need
Not sure where to start? Tell us what's bothering you.
A quieter home
Traffic, flight paths, noisy neighbours: glass that actually cuts it down.
A period or listed property
Slimline glazing that keeps the original look.
Safer doors & glass
Toughened and laminated glass where it matters most.
A brighter, cooler conservatory
Less glare, less heat, without losing the light.
Acoustic Glass
If your house is never quite quiet
A lot of homes across our patch sit somewhere noisy without anyone really deciding that: under or near Heathrow's flight paths around Windsor and Ascot, beside the M4, M25 or M40, next to a railway line, or simply on a road that's busier than it used to be. Standard double glazing takes the edge off. Acoustic glass is built specifically for the job, using a different glass makeup on one or both panes to interrupt sound instead of just insulating against heat loss.
We won't bury you in decibel tables. In practice there are three levels worth knowing about: a noticeable improvement over standard glazing for general street noise; a stronger build for busy roads, railway lines or a school nearby; and a maximum-performance option for homes properly exposed to flight path or main-road noise. We'll tell you honestly which one your house needs. The top-tier option isn't necessary for most homes, and we won't sell it to you if it isn't.
"We measure the room, not just the window. A small bedroom on a flight path needs a different answer to a big kitchen on a quiet close."
Heritage & Decorative Glass
Modern performance, without losing the original look
Windsor, Beaconsfield and Gerrards Cross all have streets where a standard double-glazed unit would look wrong the moment it went in: too deep, too reflective, missing the fine glazing bars the house was built with. Slimline heritage sealed units are made to get around that. Slim units, as slim as 12mm, sit in a frame the way the original single glazing did, while still giving you proper insulation and noise reduction behind the scenes.
We can also match existing decorative glass (lead detailing, stained or bevelled panels, textured or obscure glass for a bathroom or front door) so a replacement pane doesn't stand out from the ones either side of it. If you're in a conservation area or have a listed property, we'll talk you through what the local authority and conservation officer are likely to accept before you commit to anything. Listed buildings usually need Listed Building Consent before glazing is changed.
Toughened & Laminated Glass
Glass that's designed to break safely
Building regulations require safety glass in certain places for good reason: low-level windows, glazing in and around doors, anywhere a child or a stumble could put someone through it. Toughened glass is heat-treated so that if it does break, it breaks into small, blunt pieces instead of sharp shards. Laminated glass takes a different approach: two layers bonded to a tough interlayer, so a broken pane stays in place rather than falling out. We'll flag where safety glass is needed on your project without you having to ask, and specify it as standard, not as an upsell.
The same glass builds are used for glass balustrades (stairs, landings, terraces) where you want an unobstructed view without a solid rail in the way. Where glass is doing the structural work, it's not somewhere to compromise on specification, so we'll talk you through the options properly.
Solar Control & Self-Cleaning Glass
A conservatory you'll actually use in August
The common complaint about conservatories and glazed roofs isn't the cold, it's the heat: a room that's unusable for three months of the year because the glass lets everything through. Solar control glass cuts down on that heat gain and glare while still letting the light in, which matters more than people expect until they've lived with the alternative.
Self-cleaning glass is worth a mention too, particularly on rooflights and anything hard to reach. It uses a coating that breaks down dirt in sunlight and lets rain do most of the work, so you're not up a ladder every few months.
Commercial & Studio Projects
Glazing for offices, studios and larger projects
The same range works at commercial scale. The difference is the specification, the programme and the paperwork. If you're a business, a facilities manager, or working on a set build or studio project near Pinewood, tell us what the brief needs. Send over drawings or dimensions if you have them, and we'll tell you honestly whether it's something we can take on.
Sound-isolated glazing
Meeting rooms, offices and studios where noise needs controlling.
Safety glazing
Entrances, screens and partitions where toughened or laminated glass is required.
Solar control
Glazed frontages and rooflights that overheat in summer.
The range
A huge range of glass at a glance
Here's what we can supply and fit. If what you need isn't listed, ask. The range is wider than this table.
| Glass | What it does | Typically used for |
|---|---|---|
| Acoustic glass | Reduces outside noise | Bedrooms and living rooms near roads, railways or flight paths; offices and studios |
| Heritage sealed units | Slimline double glazing that suits original-style frames | Period properties, conservation areas and listed buildings (subject to consent) |
| Decorative & leaded glass | Matches existing detail or adds character | Front doors, period windows, bathrooms |
| Toughened glass | Heat-treated, breaks into small blunt pieces | Doors, sidelights, low-level windows, screens |
| Laminated glass | Stays in place when broken; adds security and sound reduction | Balustrades, overhead glazing, security glazing |
| Solar control glass | Reduces heat gain and glare | Conservatories, rooflights, glazed frontages |
| Self-cleaning glass | Coating breaks down dirt; rain does the rest | Rooflights, glazed roofs, hard-to-reach glass |
| Processed glass | Cut to size, painted, mirrored | Splashbacks, mirrors, shelves and cabinets |
Why Alpha Windows
The right glass, properly measured and fitted
Choosing glass from a catalogue is the easy part. Knowing which one solves your problem, what suits your property, and what a conservation officer in Beaconsfield will actually sign off on takes experience. That's our end of it, the same way it's been since 2003. We visit your home, measure properly, tell you which glass genuinely solves your problem rather than which one's on the shelf, and fit it ourselves rather than handing it to a subcontractor.
Common questions
What people ask us about glass
-
No glass will make a flight path silent, but the right acoustic build makes a genuine difference, enough that most people stop noticing it as background noise. We'll tell you honestly what level of improvement to expect for your specific room before you commit.
-
Sometimes. Listed buildings usually need Listed Building Consent before glazing is changed, and the decision sits with your local conservation officer. Some will accept slimline units; others will prefer original glass to be kept or secondary glazing added. Slimline heritage units are designed for exactly this situation, and for period homes and conservation areas without listed status they're often a good fit. We'll tell you honestly what's likely to be accepted before you commit to anything.
-
In certain locations (low-level glazing, glass near doors and similar) current building regulations require safety glass, which means toughened or laminated. We build this into the specification automatically where it applies, so it's not something you need to remember to ask for.
-
Generally we fit glass as part of a window, door, rooflight or balustrade project rather than supplying loose panes. For smaller items like splashbacks and mirrors, get in touch and we'll let you know what's possible.
-
A huge range: acoustic, heritage sealed units, decorative and leaded glass, toughened, laminated, solar control, self-cleaning, and processed glass such as splashbacks and mirrors. If you don't see what you need, ask, and we'll tell you whether we can source it.
-
Often just the pane. If it's a straightforward breakage or upgrade, we don't push you into replacing a whole window you didn't ask about. We'll be upfront if a single-pane match isn't realistic for your situation.
-
We're happy to talk them through. The same range of glass is available, and the right starting point is a conversation about the brief: what the glazing needs to do, the dimensions and the programme. Send us the details and we'll tell you honestly whether it's a job we can take on.
